Ki Ade pe lori, Ki Bata pe lese! (May the crown last long on your head, may the royal slippers last long on your feet!)
The ancient city of Ibadan, the political capital of the Yorubas, is alive with the resonant sounds of celebration. Drumming, dancing, and heartfelt prayers echo through the seven hills as a new chapter in its grand history is written. History was made with the glorious coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Joining the global chorus of celebrants is the esteemed Oluyole Progressive Union (OPU), a social club deeply rooted in the progress and cultural heritage of Ibadan. In a gesture of profound respect and unwavering support for the new monarch, the union has demonstrated its joy in a unique and lasting way.

Led by its visionary President, Alhaji Akeem Akinborode, the OPU has proudly designed and printed a special commemorative calendar to mark this historic accession to the throne. This beautiful calendar, set to be distributed among members and well-wishers, serves not just as a timekeeper, but as a daily reminder of this new era of royalty and a symbol of the union’s allegiance to the throne.
A Monarch of Many Parts: The Remarkable Journey of Oba Rashidi Ladoja
The journey of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja to the throne is a compelling narrative of public service, business acumen, and steadfast dedication to tradition. His life is a testament to the fact that modern leadership and ancient customs can blend seamlessly.
- A Scholar and an Industrialist: Born on September 25, 1944, Oba Ladoja is an accomplished Chemical Engineer. After completing his studies abroad, he worked with a multinational petroleum company before establishing his own successful shipping company, becoming a notable captain of industry.
- A Statesman and a Governor: Perhaps his most widely known role before ascending the throne was his service as the Executive Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006. His tenure was marked by a focus on education and civil service reforms, earning him the reputation of a principled and people-oriented leader. This unique background as a former democratically elected governor ascending to a traditional throne makes his reign particularly significant.
- A Dedicated Traditionalist: Despite his successes in the corporate and political worlds, Oba Ladoja remained deeply connected to the traditions of his people. He patiently and diligently climbed the rungs of the intricate and respected Olubadan chieftaincy succession ladder, moving step by step through the two ruling lines (Egbe Agba and Balogun) for decades. His long and patient journey showcases his deep respect for the institution he now leads.
The Olubadan throne is the soul of Ibadanland—a symbol of unity, a custodian of culture, and a fatherly umbrella for all. With a man of Oba Ladoja’s vast experience, integrity, and populist appeal at the helm, Ibadan is poised for a reign of unprecedented progress and harmony.
The Oluyole Progressive Union (OPU) once again congratulates His Imperial Majesty and the entire people of Ibadan. As we mark our days with the new calendar, we pray that each day of his reign brings greater blessings to the land.
Long Live the King!
That Ibadan May Excel!
