Yesterday, I had the honor of attending the Annual New Year Celebration of the Oluyole Progressive Union UK and Ireland (OPUUK), held at the Denmark Hill Community Hall. The event was a vibrant gathering of unity, culture, and purpose, reflecting the rich heritage and enduring legacy of Ibadanland.
The OPUUK and Ireland, established in March 1999, has steadfastly championed the ideals of community building and social welfarism. In my speech, I took a reflective journey down memory lane, celebrating the visionary co-founders, past executives, elders, and every member who has contributed to the association’s growth.
Special recognition was given to the present administration, led by the dynamic Alhaji Akeem Owolabi Akinborode, for their unparalleled dedication and passion. Their recent launch of the association’s website (www.opuuk.com) is a testament to their forward-thinking leadership.
The association’s philanthropic achievements stand as a beacon of hope and service. From renovating the Gynae-Septic Ward and donating hospital equipment at the Adeoyo Maternity and Specialist Hospital in the year 2000 to installing solar energy in its Operating Theatre, their impact has been profound. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their palliative support brought relief to patients and staff alike. Most recently, in late 2024, OPUUK provided relief materials worth millions of naira to two orphanages in Ibadanland. That was a massive community support for the needies and downtroddens.
The celebration was a perfect blend of elegance and entertainment. The serene environment, sumptuous meals, electrifying music, and meticulous organization by the Welfare Committee made the evening truly unforgettable. Guests and members generously supported the association, ensuring the continued success of its noble endeavors.
As we usher in a new year, I wish the OPUUK and Ireland many more years of excellence, growth, and impactful service. May their legacy of unity and charity continue to inspire generations to come.
